What You Need to Know About Biomass Energy

As we become increasingly aware of how fossil fuels impact the environment, more people are educating themselves on the importance of using renewable technology and how it can help to create a more sustainable future. In addition to having a positive impact on the environment, it can also benefit your home and your purse!

At KES Group, we can help you design and create a bespoke biomass plantroom for your organisation. Here, we discuss what you need to know about biomass energy and the benefits of installing biomass prefabricated plantrooms.

What is Biomass Energy?

Biomass energy is a renewable energy source consisting of organic material such as living or recently living plant and animal materials which can be used as fuel. When the biomass is burned, the chemical energy is released as heat. Types of biomass include:

  • Agricultural crops and waste material; Burned as fuel or converted to liquid biofuels.
  • Wood; Burned to heat building and generate electricity.
  • Animal Manure and human sewage; Converted to biogas and burned as fuel.
  • Food and garden waste; Generates electricity in power planted or converted to biogas in landfills.

Almost all industries, including hospitals, universities, hotels and sports venues, produce waste that can be converted into heat and electricity.

Advantages of Biomass Energy

As with all renewable energy sources, using it comes with a number of benefits for both the environment and your organisation. We have outlined some of the key benefits below:

Renewable; One of the key benefits of biomass energy is that there will always be a source of crops, food waste and manure. As you turn this year’s waste into fuel, you are contributing towards next years’ fuel supply.

Carbon Neutral; In addition to being a renewable energy source, biomass is also carbon neutral. Carbon from the atmosphere is absorbed into plants during photosynthesis. When the plant dies, the carbon goes back into the atmosphere. This is a continuous cycle, meaning there is a balance between the amount of carbon released from biomass fuels and that being absorbed. Due to this, biomass fuels are clean and do not contribute to global warming.

Cost-Effective; Biomass energy is inexpensive in comparison to fossil fuels such as coal or oil. They cost approximately 1/3 less than fossil fuels doing the same job. Spending 1/3 less every year will result in a considerable saving after 10 or 15 years.

Biomass Prefabricated Plantrooms

Installing biomass in your buildings has never been easier. KES Group’s Energi division can design and install modular biomass plantrooms based on your individual needs and specifications. Investing in a dedicated plantroom can help you to streamline your business as all plant and technology will be based in a dedicated space. Additionally, they will free up space within your premises and minimise any fire and security concerns.

Constructed off-site in our Omagh factory, our Energi cabins are designed to facilitate easy maintenance and equipment monitoring. They can be delivered assembled or part-assembled depending on access and limitations and will typically include a galvanised steel frame, steel plate floor and insulation to all external walls.

At KES Group, we pride ourselves on being pioneers in energy efficiency, delivering efficient performance for businesses. To find out more about prefabricated packaged biomass plantrooms, contact us today.
